Background of the Study
Post-operative pain management is a critical aspect of patient recovery, particularly in orthopedic patients who undergo surgical interventions such as fracture repairs, joint replacements, or spinal surgeries. Effective pain management not only alleviates suffering but also contributes to faster recovery, reduced complications, and improved overall outcomes (Akinyemi et al., 2023). Nurses play a pivotal role in assessing and managing pain, administering analgesics, monitoring for side effects, and educating patients on pain relief strategies. However, research suggests that many healthcare providers, including nurses, may face challenges in managing post-operative pain effectively due to factors such as inadequate knowledge, insufficient resources, and delays in pain assessment (Adebayo et al., 2024).
At Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, orthopedic patients often present with varying degrees of pain post-surgery. The hospital's nursing staff must be well-prepared to assess, monitor, and manage these patients' pain levels effectively. However, gaps in nurses' knowledge of pain management protocols, their preparedness to utilize appropriate pain relief methods, and the availability of analgesic resources may impact the quality of care. This study aims to assess the preparedness of nurses in managing post-operative pain in orthopedic patients and identify the factors influencing their ability to provide adequate pain relief.
Statement of the Problem
Orthopedic surgeries often result in significant post-operative pain that can delay recovery if not adequately managed. Despite the critical role nurses play in pain management, there may be gaps in their knowledge and preparedness, which could affect patient outcomes. At Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, orthopedic patients may not always receive timely or effective pain relief, possibly due to challenges in the nurses’ knowledge, skills, or available resources. This study will examine nurses' preparedness to manage post-operative pain in orthopedic patients, identifying barriers to effective pain management and suggesting ways to improve care.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the level of knowledge among nurses regarding post-operative pain management in orthopedic patients at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital.
To evaluate the preparedness of nurses in managing post-operative pain in orthopedic patients.
To identify challenges faced by nurses in providing adequate post-operative pain management to orthopedic patients.
Research Questions
What is the level of knowledge of nurses regarding post-operative pain management in orthopedic patients at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital?
How prepared are nurses at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital to manage post-operative pain in orthopedic patients?
What challenges do nurses face in managing post-operative pain in orthopedic patients at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital?
Research Hypotheses
Nurses with higher knowledge of pain management protocols are more likely to provide effective post-operative pain relief.
There is a significant relationship between the availability of resources and the preparedness of nurses to manage post-operative pain in orthopedic patients.
Nurses at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital face significant barriers in managing post-operative pain in orthopedic patients.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses working in orthopedic wards at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital. It will assess their knowledge, preparedness, and challenges related to post-operative pain management. A limitation of the study is that it may not account for patient-specific factors that could influence pain levels, and the results may not be generalizable to other hospitals with different resources.
